Schneider Electric Introduces OsiSense® XUM And XUV To Increase Performance And Reduce Costs In Industrial Manufacturing

July 22, 2010

Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management, recently announced the launch of the OsiSense® XUM photo-electric sensor, and the XUV optical fork, designed to help industrial manufacturers increase production efficiency while reducing energy consumption. The OsiSense® XUM line offers compact and easily-integrated miniature photo-electric sensors designed to excel at long-distance detection, reduce electrical consumption and withstand extremely severe environments. The OsiSense® XUVR and XUVA optical forks are specially designed to detect all types and sizes of objects on all varieties of conveyors, and is specifically designed for packaging and material handling machine manufacturers.

Both product lines offer simplified ease-of-use and allow industrial manufacturers to streamline operations. In addition to operating on 50 percent less energy, the OsiSense® XUM range of photo-electric sensors offers best in class sensing distances: 1m diffuse, 5m polarized reflex and 15m thru-beam sensing modes. Made to withstand severe environments, the OsiSense® XUM is insensitive to ambient light up to 40,000 lux for natural lighting, up to 10,000 lux in incandescent lighting, and features a filter accessory that allows interference-free, side-by-side mounting of several sensors. To further increase the durability of the sensors, an optional metal fixing bracket provides mechanical protection against impact, and a reinforced diecast model (IP67G/IP69K) is also being introduced that allows the OsiSense® XUM to operate in environments at risk of mechanical shocks and/or splashing oil.

Designed to provide precise sensing that can be rapidly deployed, the U-shaped OsiSense® XUVR and L-shaped XUVA metal optical forks feature a small, 0.8 mm diameter light spot, enabling robust and precise detection of extremely small parts. Typically, thru-beam systems require extra time for set-up and alignment of transmitter and receiver pairs. The XUVR and XUVA fork sensors have sturdy frames in which the transmitter and receivers are housed. The alignment is implemented at the time of manufacturing and requires no adjustment or additional time when installing the fork. It is immediately operational – saving manufacturers 100 percent in set-up time. The forks also offer extreme flexibility, enabling them to easily and quickly adapt to the specific integration needs of a machine or conveyer. Additionally, the forks feature a visible red light beam that assures precise detection alignment.

Both product lines offer manufacturers a new variety of options to reduce operational costs, minimize shut-downs and increase operational efficiency – all of which contribute to increased production and profits.
