PA American Water Completes Pipe Upgrades In Pittsburgh Area

Mcmurray, PA – Pennsylvania American Water reported recently the completion of 24 water main projects year to date, representing an investment of approximately $5M, to improve service reliability and to increase flows for firefighting in its Pittsburgh District. The company also announced its summer capital improvement plans to replace aging pipe, including more than 50 additional projects with an estimated cost of approximately $11M.

"With these significant capital investments, we are demonstrating Pennsylvania American Water's commitment to maintain and upgrade the Pittsburgh area's water system to ensure that customers receive quality, reliable water service for years to come," said Kathy L. Pape, president of Pennsylvania American Water.

The company's Pittsburgh District provides water to more than 132,000 customers in 41 Allegheny County communities. Pennsylvania American Water's $5 million investment supported the installation of more than five miles of new main, valve replacement and hydrant projects in Bethel Park, Bridgeville, the City of Pittsburgh's 18th, 19th, and 28th Wards, Jefferson Hills, Mount Lebanon, Scott Township, South Park, Upper Saint Clair and West Mifflin.

This summer, Pennsylvania American Water's capital improvements are scheduled for Baldwin Borough, Bethel Park, Bridgeville, Castle Shannon, the City of Pittsburgh's 18th, 20th, 28th and 29th Wards, Collier, Dormont, Greentree Borough, Munhall, South Fayette, Upper Saint Clair, West Mifflin and Whitehall.

The planned upgrades call for replacing more than 11 miles of aging main, as well as valves and fire hydrants. Large-scale projects include:

  • Castle Shannon – Replace 5,400 feet of eight-inch cast iron main along Castle Shannon Boulevard. The project is expected to begin in mid-June and be completed by mid-August. Work is being done in partnership with PennDOT's road expansion project. No disruption to water service is expected.
  • South Fayette Township – Replace 3,550 feet of eight-inch cast iron main on Millers Run Road. The project will replace 90-year-old main with new ductile iron pipe. Construction is expected to begin in July and completed in August.
  • West Mifflin – Replace 2,500 feet of 12-inch cast iron main along Bull Run. The project is expected to begin in May and be completed in August.
  • Greentree Borough – Replace more than 2,500 feet of eight-inch and 12-inch main along Noblestown Road. The project is expected to be completed in June.

The company will contact affected residents in advance regarding any temporary service interruptions.
