AnoxKaldnes To Upgrade Major Waste Water Treatment Plant In The United Arab Emirates

Tønsberg, Norway — AnoxKaldnes AS has together with Global Engineering Systems F.Z.C acquired a unique contract in the Emirate of Sharjah to upgrade existing sewage treatment plant from 150.000 PE to 250.000 PE.

The contract value is of 7.9 mill US $ and will be one of the largest upgrade of a municipal treatment plant in AnoxKaldnes history.

Sharjah Municipality needs to increase existing treatment capacity due to population increase, and effluent quality. The proposal provided by AnoxKaldnes and Global Engineering Systems was the only provider that could meet the criteria without requiring further expansions of the plant.

"On successful commissioning, the capacity of the plant will be increased by almost 50%", says Mr. Sultan Al Mulla, Deputy Director General of the Sharjah Municipality.

The existing activated sludge treatment stage will be upgraded with the patented moving bed biofilm technology from AnoxKaldnes. Four lanes will contain Kaldnes™ MBBR stage for pre-treatment, followed by Hybas™ biological process stage (Hybrid Biofilm Activated Sludge) to enhance nitrification.

"We explored several technologies available in the world market before we zeroed in on MBBR" states Mr. Abdul Aziz, Manager of Sharjah Municipality Drainage Section. The short gestation period, requirement of minimum civil works and low capital cost per cubic meter of treated sewage are some of the factors which weighed in favour of AnoxKaldnes AS.

The AnoxKaldnes technology will increase the plant capacity from 37,000 to 53,000 cubic metre of sewage per day. The construction time will be 8 months, full capacity operation within 11 months, compared to over 2 years for constructing a green field project of equivalent capacity.

"Although we have several Kaldnes™ MBBR plants in the region, this is the first major and most advanced municipal project being executed by AnoxKaldnes in the gulf" said Mr.Terje Andersen, Managing Director of AnoxKaldnes AS in Norway.
