Application
The ammonia and nitrate concentration of some surface waters can vary for a number of reasons:

  • Upstream discharge of high nitrate or ammonia sewage effluent
  • Leaching from agricultural land during storm conditions
  • Discharge of farm or industrial effluents
  • Seasonal effects

Continuous monitoring of nitrate and ammonia levels can allow remedial action to be taken when these values exceed the maximum admissible concentration. Nitrate and Ammonia monitors would normally be installed along with a suite of instrumentation including dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, suspended solids, and conductivity as part of an intake protection system (and sometimes one heavy metals analyser).
