AWWA Publishes Manual For Algae Treatment
Denver — The American Water Works Association (AWWA) announced today the publication of a new AWWA Manual of Water Supply Practices: M57, Algae: Source to Treatment.
Algae, which date as far back as 1.7 billion years, are a fundamental part of daily life, acting as fertilizers, fuels, food, pollution controllers and clothing dye. However, there is evidence that recent human activities have led to an increase in the frequency and severity of algae impairment of surface water. Such changes can cause degradation of watersheds and increased eutrophication, or excessive nutrients in bodies of water. The control of algae and a water treatment plant's ability to remove them from source water are important in delivering safe, palatable drinking water to the public.
M57, Algae: Source to Treatment addresses these issues and many more. The breadth of information compiled in the manual is unique among current publications, providing information on all aspects of algae-related challenges in drinking water including identification of algal species, the design and implementation of monitoring programs, and management and treatment strategies.
Also included are taxonomic keys of the common genera for the included organisms and more than 450 color and black-and-white images.
As an AWWA Manual of Water Supply Practice, M57, Algae: Source to Treatment, was written, reviewed and approved by an expert group of AWWA volunteer members who were obligated to arrive at a consensus that the information is technically accurate and reflective of current best practice.
