Drinking Water Purification System Delivers Safe Potable Water To Villagers In China
By Siemens Water Technologies
Certain areas of rural China lack access to potable water that meets national drinking water safety standards. Statistics show that over 200 million people in the Chinese countryside are drinking non-standard-conforming water, and in some villages the water is even endangering people's lives. This was true in Shangba Village, Northern Guangdong, where a stable and efficient water treatment system was badly needed.

Dissolved Organics Analyzer At Potable Water Utility Minimizes Chemical Additions And Maintenance
By Brian Hayes, Water Industry Market Manager, ABB Measurement Products
At a water utility in the northeast U.S., lack of information about the concentration of dissolved organic compounds (DOCs) in the raw river influent for a potable water utility often resulted in excess chemical usage and need for numerous grab sample. The utility processes 16 million gallons a day of water, with several neighboring towns rely on it for supply.

UV Systems Supplementing Membranes For Drinking Water Disinfection In Barcelona
By ITT Fluid and Motion Control
Most of the drinking water of the city of Barcelona is drawn from the river Llobregat, the water of which is brackish with differing parameters. In the case of too high turbidity, the water of the river is not used, but the drinking water is then obtained from various wells for further treatment. The use of disinfection steps between filtration systems, like membrane filtration or others, improves the lifetime considerably and reduces the maintenance intervals. UV disinfection is an excellent treatment method against any biofouling process during filtration processes. This method can be applied to all membrane filtrations like RO, UF, MF, and others.

LumenAER Circulator Restores Natural Beauty To Lake Atitlán In Guatemala
By AEROMIX Systems, Inc.
Lake Atitlán is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Central America, but in the summer of 2009 it began to lose some of that natural beauty it was known for. Recent hurricanes, uncontrolled civil works, and increased use of agrichemical fertilizers harmed the lake, causing elevated nitrogen and phosphorus levels. With no waste regulations being enforced, local villagers and businesses had grown accustomed to dumping waste into the lake, and local hotels were draining their sewage water directly into the water. This excessive waste raised the cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) levels and caused the lake to emit a foul odor and lose its visual appeal. More importantly, it posed a serious threat to the health of locals and tourists.

Aquatech's Seawater Reverse Osmosis Plant Succeeds In India
By Aquatech International Corporation
India's first Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP), at Mundra in Coastal Gujarat, a 4,000 MW coal-fired plant, is owned by Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL). CGPL will draw seawater from the Mundra coast for various utilities and for their main boiler. Aquatech has been awarded the contract for executing the 4,622 GPM (permeate) capacity seawater reverse osmosis plant (SWRO). The challenge is 40% permeate recovery on difficult feed water, with total dissolved solids (TDS) content varying from 42,000 mg/l to 46,000 mg/l and a maximum feed water temperature of 95° F (35° C).

Chlorine Analyzer Proves Just The Job For Seawater Duty At Dow's Terneuzen Site
By Emerson Process Management, Rosemount Analytical
The Dow Benelux site in Terneuzen, the Netherlands, uses seawater for process cooling. Environmental regulations require careful control of the concentration of chlorine added to control microbial fouling. The existing chlorine measurement system had become outdated, so after stringent tests Dow decided to replace it with a Rosemount Analytical Model TCL analyzer from Emerson Process Management. This has proved more accurate and reliable than the instrument it replaced, with significantly lower maintenance costs.
