Small Facilities Can Take Affordable And Significant Steps To Reduce The Risk Of Violations (And Improve Energy Efficiency)
By Grant Van Hemert, PE, Schneider Electric
Did you know that "more than 96% of health-based Safe Drinking Water Act violations occur at small utilities with fewer than 10,000 customers?" This fact was recently stated by American Water Works Association Deputy Executive Director Tom Curtis. He continues with the fact that "these utilities often struggle with the expense of upgrading facilities to meet new regulations." Ever-changing regulations make it important for every facility, no matter how large or small, to monitor process data and continuously improve performance of existing equipment.

A Municipal SCADA Project Comes In On Time, Under Budget, And Exceeds Expectations
By John Grey, Devin Carroll, and Christopher Little
In June of 2009, the Town of Selma, NC commissioned a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to monitor and control their lift stations, tanks, wells, and water treatment plant. Despite strict regulations and extensive paperwork, the project came in on time and under budget, while still managing to surpass the customer's expectations by allowing them to identify hidden issues and optimize the efficiency of their system. In this article, project manager John Grey and system integrator Devin Carroll discuss the factors that made the project a success.

From Obsolete To Absolute Reading
By Neptune Technology Group Inc.
In 2002, the borough of Middletown, PA was making do with a meter reading system that was obsolete in more ways than one. First, its meters were aging. The remote odometers were prone to getting dirty, to the point where nesting spiders and ants affected the movement and therefore their accuracy. System-wide, the borough's rate of non-revenue water stood at 35%. Furthermore, the company that manufactured the pulse-based meters used by the borough was no longer going to make them. The good news: Middletown now had the opportunity to leave behind a problematic system once and for all, allowing for more efficient use of the utility's human and financial resources.

| Brochure: High-Flow-Rate Water Disinfection Using UV Treatment |
Ultraviolet light disinfects by disrupting the DNA or RNA structures of microorganisms. The disruption prevents microorganisms from replicating, thereby rendering them inactive and unable to cause infection. UV Sciences Inc.'s new, high-volume, disinfection water treatment bank is capable of disinfecting water at flow rates up to 4000 gallons/minute, and its modular configuration allows for full access to each UV treatment chamber for maintenance operations.
